Teamwork for Growth: Land O'Lakes and Eggland's Best Joint Venture
Land O’Lakes, Inc., and Eggland’s Best, Inc. have formed a new joint venture to market branded specialty eggs nationally. This new venture will be called Eggland’s Best, LLC and will market both the EGGLANDS BEST and LAND O LAKES brands of eggs.
For Land O’Lakes, the joint venture will expand its participation in the growing branded specialty egg category. Additionally, sales and marketing synergies will be achieved by combining the expertise and resources of the two entities -- which is expected to drive volume growth for both brands.
For Moark, the joint venture will further strengthen the relationship we currently have with Eggland’s Best, and extends our franchise agreement well in to the future. It will also promote Moark’s strategy to become an even more focused, lower-cost producer, which will make us a stronger player in the competitive egg industry.
Clearly, this is an exciting move for Moark, Land O’Lakes and Eggland’s Best. It will better serve customers and consumers, while building the value of our brands.

New to Business in Maine, Moark Makes an Early Impact With Egg Donation
Auburn, ME – Moark, LLC, the company that recently acquired Quality Egg in Turner, has donated a trailer load of eggs to Good Shepherd Food Bank to be distributed to hunger relief organizations across Maine. The donation consisted of 19,440 dozen eggs, or 233,280 individual eggs.
Skip Hagy of Moark, LLC, and Clara McConnell, spokesperson for Good Shepherd Food Bank are shown with some of the 19,440 dozen eggs (or 233,280 individual eggs) Moark donated to the food bank. Moark recently took over operation of egg facilities in Turner, Maine. |
Moark is a subsidiary of Minnesota-based Land O’Lakes, Inc., and took over operations of the Maine egg facilities in November 2011. “Moark is committed to being a good neighbor and corporate citizen in Maine and everywhere we operate,” said Craig Willardson, President of Moark. “The egg donation is one way we can contribute to the community and help alleviate hunger – the centerpiece of Land O’Lakes’ corporate philanthropy efforts.”
Food insecurity continues to rise across the country and here in Maine. Nationwide, demand on hunger relief organizations is up 46 percent over the past four years. In Maine nearly 200,000 individuals are facing hunger, including one out of every four children.
“As we see the need for food continue to grow, now more than ever it’s important for businesses to step forward as leaders in the community,” says Clara McConnell, spokesperson for Good Shepherd Food Bank. “This donation from Moark is not only important in that it will provide essential nutrition for Mainers struggling with hunger, but it’s important in the message that it sends – that by working together, businesses and nonprofits can make a big impact.”
Willardson added: “The egg donation was a first step in contributing to the Maine community. Going forward, we’ll contribute in other ways as well, while providing employment and support for Maine’s economy through our operations.”
Land O'Lakes and the Land O'Lakes Foundation provide more than 12 truckloads of products annually to locations where the cooperative has members, plants and employees, as well as providing more than $4 million in cash and products to our communities annually, of which $2 million is directed to help alleviate hunger in the U.S.

Moark, LLC, Announces Expansion of Egg Operations Into Maine
Transaction Enhances Moark's Ability to Serve Customers in Northeast U.S.
November 8, 2011 (Fontana, Calif.) – Moark, LLC, announced today that it has agreed to a long-term lease arrangement for the assets of three Maine egg producers, commonly referred to as Quality Egg of New England LLC, Dorothy Egg Farm LLC, and Mountain Hollow Farms LLC. This transaction is expected to close shortly, based on customary closing conditions.
Moark is a major marketer, distributor, processor and producer of fresh shell eggs and egg products. Under the lease arrangement, Moark will be the sole operator of the egg production, processing and warehousing operations (as well as a feed mill) owned by the companies, which are located in Turner, Leeds, and Winthrop, Maine. At the end of the 10-year lease period, Moark will have the option of purchasing the facilities. Financial terms of the arrangement were not disclosed.
Craig Willardson, President of Moark, said: "This expansion enables Moark to better serve customers in the Northeastern United States. It complements our existing operations by adding approximately 3.6 million layers, and it provides greater access to a growing market for eggs. This will benefit our customers, the Maine-based employees, and the Maine economy."
As the operator of the Maine production facilities, Moark will evaluate its workforce requirements, but intends to continue employing the majority of the current workforce at the facilities. Moark also will institute its robust safety and quality assurance standards.
"Nothing is more important to us than the quality of our products and the safety and reliability of our operations," Willardson said.
